Stealing things

Three steals in competition/consideration at the minute as inspiration for installation piece:

1. Floating/upside down mobile technology – after Lorenzo Cambin exhibition seen in Ambit Gallery. Supporting Shinrin Yoku pieces from below may be practically better than trying to ‘hang’ them (as in the first experiments) because this would be more adaptable to different spaces.

2. Screen type structures are a consideration – thought of this after seeing Frederic Vidal’s screens in MNAC exhibition. Might allow for interesting through lighting.

3. Cut-out ‘hidden’ motifs (inspired by Sarah Casey’s ‘Drawn To The Surface’ pieces).  The holes allow for manipulating light effects and interactivity as movement past elements changes the visual appearance.

Collagraphy 25th March – 12th April

Notice what you notice; silhouetted branches against the Barcelona sky.
Notice what you notice; shadows and lines and silhouettes.

These two ‘mood boards’ underpin ideas for a set of collagraphs. They can stand alone as a mini project within FMP phase and I may submit them for the pop-up-shop exhibition. They will also provide visual material to experiment with in terms of creating veils of pattern evoking trees/forest as I develop the Shinrin Yoku installation piece. The idea of shadows relates to the patterns cast on the ground by branches and leaves – dappled light.

Proposal: from the 6 silhouette trees, select 4 from which to develop collagraph plates to cut over Easter break and print wb 15th April.

Preparing for Barcelona

Maps, more maps, tickets and a restaurant reservation.

My plans for the Barcelona trip centre around visiting parks and gardens, in addition to CCCB, MNAC, The Miro Foundation and whatever independent galleries may catch my eye. There is going to be a lot of walking! My reading about gardens should inform my observations while in Barcelona, in addition to some works of art that I have looked at for research.

Martin Boyce (TP 2011) who is interested in the psychological experience of space. This image interested me as a representation of ‘parks’ in the urban context. It will make me look out for key features, repeated ‘motifs’ if you like. BINS. SEATING. PLANTING. STRUCTURES. …….. what will I find that is common in the parks and gardens? What will make each one distinct?

It is interesting how the ‘trees’ connect to the ground and sort of have ‘roots’ in the earth in the way the light reflects in the floor. Pools of light may be something to consider to imply root systems and hartig net/ soil biome in my work.

Jan & Joel Markel 1925. This image influenced Boyce. Apparently the concrete trees were cast at the last minute in order to replace real ones that died when the garden was planted-up for an exhibition in Paris. I think they are rather strange but perhaps visually interesting and they remind me that KT suggested working with concrete in FMP experiments. I shall keep this in mind.
